Descendants of Pierre Gibaut

TreeIcon.png

This tree was added to the site in 2012 and reviewed in 2019. A further review by Guy Dixon in 2020, based upon Messervy`s genealogy of the family, has led to the addition of considerable extra detail and a new descendant line. Further information has led to the creation of yet another descendant line. All dates prior to the earliest surviving St Lawrence register in 1654, are estimated

Another review later in 2020 resulted in the addition of a new descendant line from Philippe (1825- ) at generation 14

A further review in 2021 resulted in more additions to 19th century generations

Gibaut family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Living 1441
  2. Of Les Vaux (Cap Verd) St Lawrence, Constable of that parish, 1551-1558
  3. Constable of St John, 1523-1531
  4. Marguerite was married after the death of Philbert Gibaut to Raulin Benest: see below
  5. Nicolas Gibaut`s date of birth, shown in the Armorial of Jersey 164, as 1556, has been amended to 1550, as he would, otherwise, have been born during his mother`s second marriage. Nicolas was Seigneur de la Godelière and Constable of St Lawrence, 1621-1629
  6. Living 1635, in partage with his siblings (RP 10/263). He is described in the contract as the eldest son
  7. This marriage pre-dates the parish`s earliest surviving register but is mentioned in contracts, supported by an item in a 1750 Will, below. However, Elizabeth Bisson is not the Elizabeth formerly suggested, whom Messervy, in his printed genealogy of the Le Feuvre family of Millais shows to be the childless first wife of Matthieu Le Feuvre, brother of Philippe, of Millais, Jurat
  8. Of Les Vaux. He and his wife, Marie Laurens, were the godparents of Nicolas Luce, their grandson, who was named after him, on baptism in 1694. Nicolas Gibaut could not therefore have been the man of this name who died in 1669, as previously thought
  9. Their daughter, Elizabeth Piquet, had as godparents, in 1689, Me Nicolas Gibaut and Mse Elizabeth Lorens, his wife
  10. Marie Gibaut was previously featured on this page as married to Matthieu de Ste Croix. The children of this couple were born between 1739 and 1748, when Marie would have been aged sixty!
  11. Their daughter Marie Gibaut had in 1716 as godparents Mr Nicolas Gibaut and his wife. Nicolas Gibaut, the godfather, died the following year
  12. Marguerite (1693?- ) will not have been the woman of this name to have married in 1748, Abraham Voisin, as they were still presenting children for baptism in 1754. On godparent evidence, however, the latter was clearly related closely to this branch of the Gibauts. Study of the Jersey Land Register should clarify matters, in due course
  13. René Quesnel --not Buesnel-- and his wife, had as godparents for their daughter Jeanne (1723) Nicolas Gibaut "Oncle" of the child and Elizabeth Gibaut [Laurens], the grand-mother of the child. For their son Nicolas (1737) they had the same Nicolas Gibaut and "Elizabeth Laurens" grand-mother of the child
  14. Nicolas` Will, dated 27/10/1750 and proved the following month, mentions income he had reclaimed by retraite from a member of the family of Marie Gibaut, who had married Moise Luce. Marie was his aunt and he, Nicolas, the senior male representative of her family. He had therefore, in the absence of any Luce claimant, the right to claim any asset of hers that had been sold out of the family. This is important in identifying Nicolas--and also establishing his date of death. He was not therefore the Nicolas Gibaut shown in the Armorial of Jersey as marrying Ann de La Cour in 1751. Furthermore, there is nothing within his Will to suggest he had ever married. Of significance is that he made Elie Gibaut "mon frère" the residual legatee
  15. Elie`s baptism was one of many that went unrecorded. His parentage, however, is not in doubt. Nicolas Gibaut (1698-1750) made his Will in 1750 making his "frère Elie Gibaut" his residual legatee. Furthermore, the family`s property at Les Vaux, that had belonged to many previous generations, passed through Elie to his descendants
  16. Marriage record not found
  17. Marriage record not found. However, the marriage--probably one of many that went unrecorded, through indifferent record keeping--existed and is mentioned in church records, namely: Baptism of Rachel Blampied, (St L) 1752: Godparents, Me Elie Gibaut et Mse Rachel Godfray, sa femme
  18. It is not yet clear to which marriage of Elie Gibaut, Edouard belonged. However, there is unambiguous evidence, through his being selected as godparent, that he was, indeed, "Edouard fils Elie", viz: St Lawrence Register (1754) christening of Elizabeth Blampied daughter of Jean Blampied and Rachel Gibaut, the godfather being: "Me Edouard Gibaut fils Elie". In 1771, the same couple presented in baptism Philippe, their son, the godfather being "Me Edouard Gibaut fils Elie." Rachel Gibaut, the said wife of Jean Blampied, was also a child of Elie`s, so choosing her brother Edouard as godparent, was a natural choice
  19. Marriage record not found
  20. Owner of Les Vaux, in La Vallée, St Lawrence: 1841 Census. His brother Jean, and his family, lived with him, farming the land
  21. Of Les Vaux, St Lawrence, where he farmed 10 acres: 1851 Census
  22. Of Les Vaux, La Vallée: Armorial of Jersey. Joan Stevens, in Old Jersey Houses, Volume 2, mentions that engraved in the masonry at Les Vaux is: AGB ♥ ECT 1900 for Abraham Gibaut and Elizabeth Coutanche, his wife
  23. Farmer
  24. Of Meadowbank, St Lawrence in 1941
  25. Carpenter, on marriage in 1863
  26. Farmer
  27. Navigator, on marriage in 1869
  28. Forgeron
  29. Pilot: 1841 Census and House Proprietor: 1851 Census, both of St Lawrence. The Armorial of Jersey, has an error in omitting Philippe`s wife and assuming the Miss Anne Denize who lived with them was his daughter. The above two censuses show that she was a spinster sister-in-law
  30. Carpenter
  31. Farmer at Egypt Farm, Trinity, in 1901
  32. Farmer
  33. Farmer
  34. Online sources suggest that Charles emigrated to Australia, married Clara Renouf, also from Jersey, and that they had four children there before returning to Jersey and having six further children
  35. Emigrated to USA
  36. Emigrated to USA
  37. No baptism record found
  38. Widow running La Chasserie farm in St Lawrence in 1901
  39. Mariner. Joan Stevens, in Old Jersey Houses, Volume II, (Phillimore, 1977), 42, mentions that a group of letters from Jourdain Gibaut to his father Abraham culminate with one from Cronstadt, dated 30 July 1822, including the extraordinary announcement..."I beg that... you will make no mention of the name Gibaut, as I have changed my name... I am on the point of marrying a New York girl... she is 151/2 years old. If possible I intend to feign illness so as not to go to India. It is a country that I do not like much...I remain your son until death, LGB Richard Burr". (This has perhaps been misread. It would more logically have been "JGB")
  40. Letter dated 1835, written to his brother Abraham: ibid.
  41. Settled in St Helier
  42. This is not the Jean Gibaut who married in 1832, in St Lawrence, Marie Hamon (1798-1848): see "Discussion". The marriage and its issue, in their correct location, feature above, on this tree
  43. Susanne Elizabeth was bequeathed in the 1750 Will of her uncle, Nicolas Gibaut, a silver cup engraved with the name and initials: "Elizabeth Bisson and AG" for Elizabeth Bisson and Abraham Gibaut (1590-1661) her husband, in generation 6. This is a useful confirmation of the family genealogy between generations 6 and Nicolas in generation 10
  44. Godparents: Philippe Gibaut and Catherine Le Goupil, his wife
  45. Elizabeth`s godparents, in 1664, were Noé Le Cras and his wife. The wife will be Elizabeth Gibaut, "widow of Noé Le Cras" who was twice a godmother to children of Jean Remon and Jeanne Gibaut, his wife; namely in 1670 for Sara Remon and in 1679 for a second Sara Remon born to the couple. In the latter instance, the widowed Elizabeth Gibaut`s son, Edouard Le Cras, acted with her, in his case, as godfather. It is likely that the elder Elizabeth Gibaut belongs in generation 8, with Nicolas and Philippe as brothers
  46. Pierre and Elizabeth have left their initials engraved upon Les Landes Farm: "17 PLCN.EGB.ILCN 16". The "ILCN" presumably representing their son. From this couple were descended the Le Cornus, who became Seigneurs of Vinchelez de Haut in the early 19th century and of La Hague in the 1870s
  47. Godparents: Jean Remon fils Matthieu and Elizabeth Gibaut
  48. Provisional placement: see above
  49. Date of death from the Armorial of Jersey 165
  50. Living 1635:see reference below
  51. Marie Gibaut and Philippe Bisson, her husband, are mentioned in the 1635 partage; Marie being senior in age to Jean Mahault`s wife, but younger than that of Jean Valpy: P 10/263. This was Philippe`s second marriage
  52. R.P.10/263 (1635)
  53. Their son, also named Thomas Le Goupil ( -1655), although born in St Brelade, settled in St Lawrence and was Constable of the parish, 1652-1655
  54. The Armorial of Jersey, 164, has Louis Gibaut as born in 1568. As usual, no sources are given and this was before the start of the earliest St Lawrence Register, so this will have been a date arrived at by the donors of the article. Louis` mother, Marguerite Langlois, was married, after the premature death of Philbert Gibaut, to Raulin Benest of St Lawrence: see that family and R.P. 3/183 (1611). They had two daughters, the youngest of whom could not have been born much after 1558, judging by her own marriage and the date of birth of her first-born (1577). Raulin and Marguerite`s eldest daughter was born about 1556, whilst they, themselves, probably married in the previous year, 1555. Philbert Gibaut had thus died in about 1554
  55. The descendants shown here, of this couple, are based upon Payne`s Armorial of Jersey 165
  56. Raulin Gibaut was living in 1552, with issue, as mentioned in a court case
  57. Rector of St Peter 1496-1507
