- ↑ Nicolas Romeril either had a Le Gallais mother or wife. Cour d`Héritage (CH), 1528 [translated]: “John Le Gallais sued by Collas (or Nicolas) Romeril, to cause him to recognise him as a blood relative” [and as such, having a claim on the inheritance of the said Le Gallais` parents] This points to the likelihood of a Le Gallais mother. Such actions do not indicate the defendant`s refusal to fulfill his duty as the eldest son, in arranging a partage, but tended to hasten events and were often quite amicable. For example, in 1534 Collas Romeril was acting on behalf of John Le Gallais, in an action before the same court against Matthieu Le Geyt, who had purchased a part of their inheritance. He followed it with a similar action, himself, against Le Geyt. In this instance, however, the court recorded it as being “in right of his wife". The following identifies Romeril`s brother-in-law, Le Feuvre: CH June 1537: “Nicolas Le Feuvre, in right of his wife,” in an action against Nicolas Romeril, “to provide [his wife] with a part of the inheritance”. Then, in December that year, in a continuation of this action, with the same parties, a further piece of information is recorded: “Nicolas Romeril junior sued by Nicolas Le Feuvre, in right of his wife........” Being the party responsible for the `partage`, he will have been the elder son. Nicolas senior will, almost certainly, have been his recently deceased father
- ↑ The ainé, or elder son, living St John?
- ↑ Le plus jeune, Langton Miscellany, at La Société Jersiaise. He had settled in St Helier, making it more likely that he was a cadet son with an elder brother, as yet unidentified
- ↑ Placed in and by La Généalogie de la Famille Ahier, by the Rev J A Messervy. In 1582, (CH) Edouard Romeril, who lived on the Fief de Mélèches, in St Helier, was required by Thomas Lempriere, fils Philippe, to prove that “he and his predecessors had enjoyed without interruption for 40 years a certain bank, in St Saviour, to the south-east of the field named La Pièce au Roulx.” Edouard`s descent from the first two Nicolases, above, and their Le Gallais spouse, is reflected as late as September 1574, before the C.H. when, having sold a part of his Le Gallais inheritance to Guillaume de Ste Croix, the latter`s son, Helier, was sued for `la retraite` by Matthieu Le Gallais
