****4 Catherine Seale (1502-1535) <ref>The placement of Catherine and her brother Pierre Seale, ''ABSJ,'' XI, 102, is based upon the transactions of Catherine`s grandchild Perrine Bisson, and her husband Nicolas Le Maistre, with specific members of this Seale family. They are: Registre Public 1/183 (1604), wherein Le Maistre sold to Jean Seale fils Germain, 3 Quartiers annual wheat rente, and R.P.3/80 (1610) whereby the said Le Maistre and Perrine, his wife recognised an obligation with regard to Thomas Seale, each of the Seale parties being in generation 6. Although further details are lacking, the rente sale was probably of a part of Perrine`s grandmother`s Seale inheritance. The other transaction would appear to be a final adjustment, by way of partage</ref> m (1519) Thomas Bisson (1495-1535)

******6 Pierre Seale (1566- ) <ref>The initials and date, '''PS 1611''', on a fireplace lintel at The Old Court House, St Aubin, were believed to be by Joan Stevens, those of the "Pierre Seale, who married Sara Clement 1598": ''Old Jersey Houses,'' Volume II, (Chichester: Phillimore & Co.), 221. If this is correct, which seems likely, then Pierre was the local Merchant of this name who was in 1626 in the Southampton trade. A Pierre Seale was Mayor of Southampton in 1630 and 1642. The former date would match well his career, as Jersey merchants trading with Southampton frequently had houses in each place (qv. [[Early_de_Gruchy_shipowners|Elie de Gruchy]], who was Mayor in 1682 and 1697). The latter date may refer to Pierre Seale junior</ref> m (1599, St B) Sarah Clement (1578-1659)

From John Jean`s list of Jersey Sea Captains, in ''Jersey Sailing Ships,'' (Chichester: Phillimore & Co., 1982), 160, he was in 1603 Master of ''Amité.'' Becoming a merchant shortly afterwards, Pierre Seale was Sheriff of Southampton, 1628 and Mayor in 1630 and 1642. This tree, based upon that featured in An Armorial of Jersey, 332-3, was added to the site in 2010, enlarged in 2014 and further reviewed in 2019

Seale family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. The placement of Catherine and her brother Pierre Seale, ABSJ, XI, 102, is based upon the transactions of Catherine`s grandchild Perrine Bisson, and her husband Nicolas Le Maistre, with specific members of this Seale family. The other transaction would appear to be a final adjustment, by way of partage
  2. ABSJ, XI, 102, op. cit.. Pierre probably had no issue
  3. Constable Of St Brelade, 1615-1621, the year of his death
  4. Constable of St Brelade, 1644-1651
  5. The tree published in An Armorial of Jersey shows Jean marrying Jane Anthoine, the heiress of Jean. No record of that marriage has yet been found. In the absence of an alternative that fits any known facts, the bride`s name and parentage have been retained. Verification or otherwise will no doubt lie within Jersey`s Land Registry
  6. Godparents: Jean Le Goupil and Susanne Anthoine
  7. Godparents: Monsr. Pierre Seale and Madame, his wife
  8. Of Highland Farm, La Moye
  9. Constable of St Brelade, 1878-1902. Bought Le Coin in 1885 for £1,600 and sold it in 1894
  10. Lived at Laurel House, St Brelade in 1891, previously at Corbiere
  11. Pipon. Although family records show sometimes Piton, the 1692 marriage register entry is unmistakeable, as are the names of godparents of children born of the marriage
  12. Settled in Devon, where he purchased the estate of Mount Boone
  13. Member of Parliament for Dartmouth; created a Baronet (1838)
  14. Captain, Royal Navy
  15. Chief Justice, Cape of Good Hope
  16. Constable of St Brelade, 1689-1690; 1692-1693; Captain in the Militia
  17. Marriage record not found
  18. Seigneur of Samares
  19. Seigneur of Samares, who sold that fief to Hammond
  20. Rector of St Clement, 1729-1746. He latterly settled in England: ABSJ, VII, 271-2. The Armorial of Jersey, 332, states that from Thomas Seale and Elizabeth Dumaresq, his wife, was descended Edward Wilmot Seale Esq., of Malmesbury House, East Dulwich
  21. Marriage record not found but Messervy mentions it and Elizabeth`s date and place of burial (1752, St Clement) in ABSJ, VII, 272
  22. Huguenot merchant. They were the parents of the Rector of St Helier, Pierre Daniel Tapin
  23. Seigneur of Longueville
  24. Of La Maison du Coin, St Brelade; Jurat 16-1646
  25. Attorney-General
  26. Settled in Southampton
  27. Jurat
  28. The initials and date, PS 1611, on a fireplace lintel at The Old Court House, St Aubin, were believed to be by Joan Stevens, those of the "Pierre Seale, who married Sara Clement 1598": Old Jersey Houses, Volume II, (Chichester: Phillimore & Co.), 221. If this is correct, which seems likely, then Pierre was the local Merchant of this name who was in 1626 in the Southampton trade. From John Jean`s list of Jersey Sea Captains, in Jersey Sailing Ships, (Chichester: Phillimore & Co., 1982), 160, he was in 1603 Master of Amité. Becoming a merchant shortly afterwards, Pierre Seale was Sheriff of Southampton, 1628 and Mayor in 1630 and 1642. The former date would match well his career, as Jersey merchants trading with Southampton frequently had houses in each place (qv. Elie de Gruchy, who was Mayor in 1682 and 1697). The latter date may, however, refer to Pierre Seale junior
  29. Thomas Seale, "a Captain or Merchant before 1644": J. Jean, Jersey Sailing Ships, op.cit., 160. Thomas Seale, fils Germain, Constable of St Brelade, 1621-1629
