New records

From August 2020 we have started adding records from non-Anglican churches, and this process will continue as more records, held by Jersey Archive, are digitised and indexed. Our database now includes buttons enabling a search within registers of Roman Catholic, Methodist and other non-conformist churches. These records will automatically appear within the results of any search made from this page.

Origin of Surname

The name originates from the Latin word ripa meaning a river bank, or possibly a plateau by a river or from places of the same name. As a surname it originally denoted someone who lived at such a place. The French for a river bank is rive. However, the name in Jersey may not have originated in France, but in England. The earliest records, as indicated in Descendants of Thomas Rive say that Thomas Rive was un soldat anglais - 'an English soldier' - so Rive is probably a phonetic attempt to spell Reeve, which comes from the Anglo Saxon, meaning a manorial steward.

Early records

The first Rive baptism is found in the St Peter register in 1652, and until the 19th century, the family lived largely in this parish and neighbouring St Ouen and St Brelade. There was also a small branch in St Helier.

Edward Rive, born in Jersey in 1872, worked at this store in Owen Sound, Ontario after emigrating. He was the son of Elias and Mary, nee Cochrane. He married Harriet Amelia Moore in 1900

Rive businesses span the globe. Here is an historical picture of a family store in Masterton, New Zealand. It was run by Philip Alfred Rive, born in St Helier in 1853, the son of Elias and Anne, nee Kingston. He emigrated to New Zealand where he married Annie Elizabeth Luxford in 1880. She died in 1884 after giving birth to twins, who also died, leaving Philip with three living children aged between 1 and 3. Two years later he married Annie's younger sister Eliza, who had five children with Philip

Think of searching for variants with or without a prefix, such as Le or De. That will display all records of the chosen type for that family name, and you can narrow the search by adding a given name, selecting a parish or setting start and end dates in the form you will see above.
