Origins of surname
We had previously not found an explanation for the derivation of this name, and are grateful to a French user of Jerripedia for the information that it is a regional form of the word moustier or moûtiers, which is also a town name: Moûtiers in Savoie or Moustiers-Sainte-Marie in the South. In Manche, there are Les Moitiers d'Allones and Les Moitiers-en-Bauptois. In medieval French, this word meant 'church' (the building)
The spelling Moitier is common in Lower Normandy and the area of France between Paris and the Belgian Border. Moitie is hardly known in Lower Normandy but is found in much greater numbers north of Paris
Early records
The first appearance of this surname in Jersey records was the baptism of Adelina Jane, daughter of Charles Desire and Esther Moitie in St Lawrence in 1873. The spelling Moitier, which has been much less common in Jersey, first appeared in the same year with the baptism of Edith Mary, daughter of Peter Moitier and Mary Pinel in St John. There is considerable confusion, however, with baptisms of siblings showing different surname spellings, and variations from one census to the next
