Record Search

Direct links to lists of baptisms, marriages and burials for the Desmares family can be found under Family Records opposite. If you want to search for records for a spelling variant of Desmares, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Origins of surname

This name is puzzling. A literal translation is 'from the ponds', or pools, suggesting somebody living by ponds, but none of our usual sources has a reference to the name, yet it is quite a common surname in French records, particularly in the Loire area of the country. The closest name for which we have a derivation is Desmars, which sounds as if it should have the same origin, but is said to mean someone from a locality called les Mars. It is possible that Desmarés is a corruption of Desmarais (the pronunciation with an accented é is identical) which means from the marches

Further research which led to the extended tree below has revealed that the name is most common in Normandy and is, indeed, believed to be derived from the old French mare, meaning 'pond'

Early records

The first appearance of this surname in Jersey records was the baptism of Guillaume, son of Francois Desmares and Esther Dolbel, in St Helier in 1718. His brother Francois was baptised in 1721, but there was then a gap of 130 years before the first child of Pierre Francois Desmares and Esther Mourant was baptised in Grouville
