Families associated with the property

  • A stone in the west gable carries the date 1644 and the initials WS. This probably represents William Snow.
  • A second finely carved stone in the facade has the initials LV, RDLC and IPV, and the date 1745. This records Louis Voisin and his wife Rachel de La Cour, who married in 1725, and their son Jacob Philippe Voisin, born the same year.

It is believed that the corner bearing the stone is older than the rest of the facade, which was probably rebuilt in 1745, the date on the stone.

Historic Environment Record entry

Listed building

A mid-19th century house retaining original features and contributing to streetscape character. Five-bay, two-storey house on to road with single storey lean-to and extension on north side. Front (west) elevation: Hipped slate roof. Rendered chimneys. Grey render, ashlar effect with vermiculated keystones and rusticated quoins. Windows are two-pane (6/6) sashes with margins. Six-panel door. Overlight with coloured glass margins. Console bracket.

Old Jersey Houses

The house is listed in the first volume of Joan Stevens's Old Jersey Houses, but only to mention the 1644 datestone, which is wrongly shown as 1666. A correction in the appendix to subsequent editions mentions the 1745 stone. There is an enlarged entry in the second edition, correcting the earlier error, but a drawing of the second stone wrongly shows the date as 1746.

Notes and references

  1. The name seems to have varied between Albion and Albany house over the years. Both names are shown in the 1901 census
