In 1938 and 1939 the newspapers were full of articles predicting an impending war against Germany and in Jersey.
Islanders were preoccupied with the thought that the aerial warfare which was so important in the later years of the previous world war posed a major threat this time round.
Little did they know that there would be no time to prepare and no defence against the German air raid when it did come in 1940, followed rapidly by the German invasion.
Meetings were held giving advice on air raid precautions, gas masks issued, shelters built and sand bags filled.
